Rookie Lifeguard General Information as provided by RLSSuk.
The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). For most children Rookie Lifeguard will be their first opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play.
The Rookie skills will make Rookies aware of how to take better care of themselves, their family and friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sport skills as well as life support and water safety elements. Rookie Lifeguard fulfils all of the Key Stage 2 water safety elements of the National Curriculum.
Rookie Lifeguard has been developed for children aged 8-12 years although the age range is provided for guidance only as younger and older children can also benefit from the awards.
Progressing from Bronze Stage 1 to Gold Stage 3 and with the Rookie Master Lifeguard award, Rookies can be challenged and achieve at all levels. There are also Speciality Bolt-on awards to keep the activities varied and exciting.
Rookie Lifeguard is supported by the Rookie website which contains games and information for Rookies, Parents, and Instructors. Visit the Rookie website at www.lifesavers.org.uk/rookie. Rookie Lifeguard classes are safely and professionally delivered by RLSS UK Rookie Instructors.
Rookie Lifeguard is also part of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS), promoting an integrated approach to teaching swimming, aquatic sports and safety skills.
